Parishes and Groups
Many parishes, organisations and prayer groups support vocations and the seminary. Here are some suggestions.
1 Talk about Vocations! Many of the young people in our parishes have never considered that God might be calling them to the priesthood or consecrated life. To be able to hear the Lord’s call and answer him requires prayer and an attentiveness to his voice. That means talking in our parishes about the possibility of a vocation and supporting young people in their faith and prayer. Perhaps there are young people in your parish you could gently ask about the possibility of a vocation.
2 Holy Hour for Vocations Many parishes have a regular Holy Hour to pray for vocations and the work of the seminary. If it’s regulary advertised, this is also a good way to keep the subject of vocation alive in people’s thoughts and private prayer.
3 Rosary Prayers for Vocations Other parishes regularly pray the Rosary for vocations, or have a prayer for vocations at the end of the Rosary each day.
4 Fundraising Put together a group to fundraise for the Priests’ Training Fund, either as a regular activity or for a one-off campaign or project. Alternatively, simply consider the seminary in your usual parish charity projects. In some parishes Confirmation groups have chosen Allen Hall as one of their fundraising projects.
5 Invite Speakers to Talk about Vocations There might be occasional opportunities in your parish to invite speakers to talk about vocations to the priesthood, diaconate and consecrated life. Often asking your own parish priest to speak about his vocation story at Mass, in a discussion group or even in a Confirmation class can inspire new vocations.
6 A Novena for the Seminary Another possibility is to arrange a novena for vocations and the seminary. Some parishes have used Allen Hall’s Mulberry magazine to pray for a few seminarians by name each day. The seminarians value these prayers immensely, and appreciate the gesture of solidarity and support for them on their journeys.
