On Friday 21st September the students of Allen Hall were privileged to attend a Mass of Thanksgiving for the 80th birthday of Cardinal Cormac Murphy O”Connor.
The main celebrant was Archbishop Vincent Nichols, who recalled Cardinal Cormac”s “irrepressible zest for life” and “great capacity for fun and laughter”. The Cardinal preached with his normal warmth and good humour, looking back over his life and recollecting both his successes and failures. He quoted Saint Gregory, whom he also cited on the day of his installation:
“Who am I? What kind of a watchman am I? I do not stand on the pinnacle of achievement. I languish rather in the depths of my weakness. And yet the Creator and Redeemer of Mankind can give me, unworthy though I be, the grace to see life whole and the power to speak effectively of it. It is for love of Him that I do not spare myself in preaching Him.”
Ad multos annos, Cardinal Cormac!
